Contracting the Coronavirus is a dangerous phase for people in general. However prisoners in Iran are considered to be at the highest risk when contracting the virus. Under the Islamic government in Iran, political prisoners are under horrendous pressure. The government has claimed that seventy thousand prisoners, whom their sentences were less than five years, have been released from the prisons. Moreover a small number of political prisoners have been sent home on short term permission, but there are still a huge number of political prisoners who are kept in prisons despite their severe illnesses.
The Islamic government in Iran has recently sentence 150 prisoners on the charge of “spreading the rumors in relation to Coronavirus” and has disrupted their lives. On the 10th of March 2020, three members of the ‘Writers Guild of Iran’, named Reza Khandaan (Mahabadi), Baktash Abtin and Keyvan Bazhan, were summoned to a prisons in Tehran to carry out their prison sentences. Iran is one of the highest risk zones for Coronavirus; therefore many cities are expected to go under quarantine. Despite the rising cases of Coronavirus, 26 people related to Baha’i have been summoned by the Revolutionary Court and given seven days to submit their defenses.
It should be noted that there is a long list of political prisoners in Iran, who are in danger due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Here are some cases:
Jafar Azimzadeh, the secretary of the Labors’ Free Union, has not been released from the prison, despite having serious illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure and digestive problems. Majid (Aaran) Tibash, a political prisoner in the city of Orumieh prison, was also not released from prison despite the fact that he needs to continue his treatments outside the prison. Atena Daemi, a women’s right activist, who has also been active against death penalty in Iran; her released has been also refused by the head of the judiciary. Yasaman Ariani, Saba Kordafshari, Atena Daemi are among the political prisoners in Evin prison of Tehran, who have been reported sick with Coronavirus-related symptoms. Golrokh Iraee and a number of female political prisoners, who are in Qarchak prison in Varamin and have still been kept in prison despite their critical conditions.

There are hundreds of political prisoners in Iran, who need urgent help with critical physical conditions and should be provided with medical care, their needs are even more urgent and threatening with the Coronavirus pandemic.
We demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran immediately and unconditionally or at least for the time being they should be released temporary so that they can be safe from the deadly and fast spreading virus. This is a fundamental human right that should be granted to the prisoners in the current situation of the Coronavirus outbreak. Do not forget that these prisoners are kept in prisons just because they have practiced their freedom of expression.

Mina Ahadi – Member of headquarter of the Campaign to Fight Coronavirus Outbreak in Iran
This campaign is organized by a group of political and social activists outside Iran to help the people in Iran.
