Help Save the life of Three Prisoners Sentenced to Death in Iran

Two young men for criticizing Islam

One woman for translating material for an association

Three political prisoners of conscience named Sina Dehghan, Mohammad Nouri, and Marjan Davari are sentenced to death in Iran. The crimes of which they are accused is yet another indication of the systematic and brutal suppression of civil and political freedoms, and the lack of freedom of expression in Iran which have been  the hallmark of the Islamic Republic since the beginning of its reign.

Who are these three prisoners?

Sina Dahghan, age 21, was arrested on October 21, 2015, that is, when he was nineteen years old and was sentenced to death in Arak Penal Court. He was arrested for having written critical material about Islam opposing Islamic sanctities on the social media Line.  During interrogation the security authorities had told Sina that if he accepts the accusations and then “repents” he would be pardoned. Nonetheless, despite having drawn confession under torture, an execution sentence was issued and the sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court towards the end of January 2017.

Mohammad Nouri, age 20, is a friend of Sina Dehghan and was arrested on similar charges. He was eighteen when he was arrested. Mohammad Nouri is imprisoned in Arak prison and he has also received a death sentence. According to the latest information we have received, Mohammad Nouri’s execution sentence has also been confirmed by the Supreme Court. We have received information from inside his prison that he suffers from intense depression and his psychological condition is a cause for alarm.

Marja Davari, age 50, is a scholar, translator and writer. She is at present imprisoned in the Shahr Rey prison. She was arrested in September 2015. Marjan was sentenced to death on March 12, 2017 by the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. One of her charges is membership in the Eckankar community (Eckankar is a new spiritual movement founded in 1965 in the U.S. It claims that through spiritual perseverance its followers can experience what they call “divine light and sound”). Marjan denies membership in this community. As a scholar and translator she has translated some of their publications roughly 20 years ago.

We have so far succeeded to reflect the plight of these three prisoners and make their voices heard, but this is not enough. More is needed to save the life of these three people. Sina, Mohammad, and Marjan are not the first or the last victims of execution sentences. The only way to prevent the issue and the implementation of execution orders, the only way to save the life of Sinas, Mohammads, and Marjans is widespread, worldwide protests. Only five minutes of your time can help the voice of these prisoners reach more people.
